New Delhi: In a significant step towards realizing the vision of a “Green Viksit Bharat,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday flagged off 200 electric buses by PMI Electro Mobility on the occasion of World Environment Day. The event, held in Delhi, symbolized a powerful dual commitment to zero-emission public transport and a greener, more sustainable India.
The newly launched electric buses—part of PMI’s DEVi series—will operate on 30 designated green routes across the city. Designed to deliver zero-emission travel, these buses represent a crucial component of the government’s broader push towards clean urban mobility. The initiative, supported by the Delhi Government, aims to not only reduce vehicular emissions but also improve the quality of life for the residents of the national capital.
Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed his government’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility. Emphasizing the importance of clean mobility, the Prime Minister said the launch of electric buses would significantly contribute to making Delhi cleaner and greener, while also enhancing the “Ease of Living” for its citizens.
The Prime Minister also posted on X (formerly Twitter): “Building a clean and green Delhi! Flagged off Electric Buses under an initiative of the Delhi Government aimed at boosting sustainable development and clean urban mobility. Additionally, this will also improve ‘Ease of Living’ for the people of Delhi.”
Alongside the electric bus flag-off, the Prime Minister also participated in the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign by planting a Banyan sapling at Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park in Delhi. The initiative, launched to encourage every citizen to plant at least one tree in honour of their mother, is designed to promote biodiversity, enhance climate resilience, and deepen ecological awareness across communities.
In alignment with the Prime Minister’s call for environmental stewardship, PMI Electro Mobility undertook a complementary initiative by distributing 10,000 eco-friendly seed cards in Delhi. Each seed card, embedded with Basil and Wildflower seeds, is biodegradable and designed to be directly planted into the soil. The cards are expected to germinate within two weeks and contribute to increasing the city’s green cover.
Citizens receiving the seed cards were encouraged to plant them at home or in their neighbourhoods and share selfies on social media, tagging PMI’s LinkedIn page to inspire a wider culture of environmental consciousness and civic participation.
Dr. Aanchal Jain, CEO of PMI Electro Mobility, expressed deep pride in the company’s role in supporting the nation’s sustainable transformation. Speaking at the event, Dr. Jain said:
“At PMI Electro Mobility, we are proud and deeply humbled to contribute to India’s green transformation. It is a moment of immense honour for us to have our electric buses launched by the Hon’ble Prime Minister on World Environment Day.
PMI’s journey reflects the spirit of the Prime Minister’s visionary mission for a Green Viksit Bharat. His transformative policies and farsighted initiatives have not only shaped the national agenda but also serve as a guiding force behind our work. In many ways, PMI has grown on the foundation of this vision—and continues to move forward inspired by his thoughts on sustainability and innovation.
As a small yet heartfelt gesture to honour the inspiring initiative ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, we distributed 10,000 eco-friendly seed cards, encouraging citizens to plant and nurture greenery as a tribute to Mother Earth.”
With this latest addition, PMI Electro Mobility now operates a fleet of over 2,500 electric buses in 31 cities across India. These vehicles collectively contribute to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, estimated to prevent over 250,000 metric tons of CO₂ annually. Over the lifecycle of these buses, the total reduction is projected to exceed 3 million metric tons.
The convergence of clean transport and environmental conservation on World Environment Day underscored the government’s holistic approach to sustainability. By combining large-scale technological innovation with grassroots green initiatives, the event set a strong precedent for India’s continued efforts to protect the planet while fostering economic progress.
As the Prime Minister’s twin initiatives—flagging off electric buses and launching the tree-planting campaign—take root, they serve as a collective call to action for citizens, companies, and communities alike: to invest in a greener tomorrow, today.
